Interview with Elena E.Mazinani

Introduce yourself and tell us more about the areas of your practice?

My name is Elena Mazinani. I am a family and divorce lawyer. Mazinani & Associates is a family and divorce firm in Ontario. We represent clients who are going through a separation and divorce in relation to child custody and support, spousal support, and division of assets.

What inspired you to pursue a career in law?

I became a lawyer because I started working in courts and tribunals as a Certified Farsi and Spanish interpreter and fell in love with the profession. I am passionate about advocating for individuals and solving their legal problems. I enjoy diving into cases to find the weaknesses of my opponent’s argument. I like the challenge and enjoy the adversarial system.

What is your competitive advantage in your field of practice?

My competitive advantage in family and divorce law is my ability to speak various languages and understand different cultures. Also, I only practice in the area of family law and divorce, which gives me the opportunity to specialize in one are of law to serve my clients better. I am dedicated, disciplined, organized and take ownership of the case as I do not see it as a file sitting on my desk but someone’s life.

Where do you see yourself in about 5 years?

I see myself doing more complex family law cases in the next five years. I intend to focus on high income, high net worth and high conflict cases. At the same time, I have been doing pro bono work to give back to our community and help underprivileged individuals in need of legal advice.

Share one of your memorable experiences practicing as a lawyer

One of the most devastating experiences in my career was when my client’s daughter committed suicide during the parties’ divorce, as she found out that her father, who was sexually abusing her, was not her biological father. This experience has scarred me for life.

Share one of the important cases you were involved in, and how you changed the outcome to your client's advantage?

I work with lawyers and appraisers in Iran. Therefore, I am able to obtain a list of undisclosed assets that the party has in Iran, which they have failed to disclose. Therefore, this usually changes the outcome of the case because the opponent settles when they realize they have been caught in a lie.

How do you use information technology and digital tools in your legal profession?

Our office is paperless, we use a family law software and digital tools to make the legal experience convenient and affordable for our client.

In the age of Al, access to verifiable legal information is crucial. How has your experience been with Facelaw thus far?

My experience with Facelaw has been positive and constructive. Facelaw is a great legal directory and tool for legal information for our community.

In what ways do you support or give back to your local community?

I give back to our community by taking on files that require legal representation, but the person is unable to afford our services. Specially when there are young children involved in the case, I assist the family and waive my legal fees.

What are your hobbies and what do you enjoy doing in your spar time?

I have a personal trainer, hairstylist, and manicurist who always make me feel better specially after winning or losing a case. I like salsa dancing and attend many social events. Socialization is my forte. However, the biggest joy of my life is spending time with my two sons ages 6 and 4. Their unconditional love gives me strength, happiness and hope.
